The MD8243 is a manufacturable reference design that speeds time-to-market of SD redistribution encoders for a wide range of applications, such as redistribution of television broadcast programming in multiple-dwelling units and hotels, and broadcast of corporate videos.
The modular design consists of a separate dual DXT DX8243-based processor board and an SD I/O board. Each DX8243 processor is capable of encoding up to 2 independent SD streams for a total of 4 SD channels per MD8243 board.
The Magnum Semiconductor DX8243 processors on the MD8243 produce MPEG-2 quality video that is superior to competing solutions in the market at the same bit rates. With superior video quality at 3.2Mbps the DX8243 allows up to 12 MPEG-2 or up to twice that much H.264 SD channels in a single 6MHz, 38.8Mbps QAM link.
The MD8243 is a complete solution, which includes not only video processing, but also stereo audio encoding in Dolby Digital CE, MPEG-1 Layer II (MP3) and AAC (HE and LC) formats for each video channel.
Video and audio elementary streams are multiplexed in an MPEG-2 Transport Stream for output over an ASI link. A separate ASI input provides support for an external PSIP/SI table data generator. The MD8243 multiplexes received table data with the audio-video transport stream for final output. Next to PAT and PMT, PSIP support includes MGT, TVCT and CVCT, while SI support includes NIT and SDT. In addition, cascaded TS multiplexing can be supported by connecting the ASI outputs to ASI inputs of two or more MD8243 boards.
The MD8243 provides OEMs with maximum flexibility. OEMs can use the processor board as is, and only customize the I/O board to fit their specific requirements, or modify both processor and I/O board to specific form factor, I/O and cost objectives.
The MD8243 includes a rich API set and source code libraries that support OEMs in developing application software for their DX8243-based products. Hardware design is supported through a complete set of schematics, bill of materials and manufacturing files for the processor and I/O board. The MD8243 is also available as an off-the-shelf board for system integrators and OEMs.
